Almost every day you look at the news or read the local paper there will be an article about how packages are stolen off somebody’s porch. It is becoming a common crime these days for thieves to watch for deliveries and then just walk up and take the packages. People are starting to install security cameras but there are still more things you can do to keep this from happening to you.
In a recent study it was reveled that in 2017, 25.9 million Americans had a package delivery stolen from their door step. Now with the holiday season just around the corner we can expect the number of stolen deliveries to climb sharply. The holidays are the biggest season for deliveries, of course. The 2 1/2 weeks before Christmas see package deliveries double, if not more. But there are some things you can do to help protect against this crime and now is the time to begin planning.
The best thing you can do to protect your packages is be proactive – especially when you know you’ll be out of town when a package arrives. The U.S. Postal Service, UPS, FedEx and any other delivery courier has the ability to hold your package at a nearby facility.
Create some coverage for your porch so that packages can’t be seen easily from the street. Package thieves are most likely to strike when they see a package sitting out in the open. If they can’t see a package from the street, they’re far less likely to walk up to see what they can grab.
As mentioned before, more people are installing cameras as an active deterrent. A smart thief will stay away from a porch that’s filming them, but those that don’t will give you a nice image to send to the police.
There are many other ways to deter thieves from taking your packages this holiday season. For more information contact your local police department.
